Sarawak Premier Highlights Aerospace and AI as Economic Drivers
KUCHING – Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, has emphasised the pivotal role of engineers in steering the state’s future economy, with aerospace and artificial intelligence (AI) identified as key sectors for growth.
Speaking at the opening of the 16th International UNIMAS Engineering Conference (EnCon2026), the premier underscored the importance of innovation and technical expertise in addressing global challenges and unlocking new opportunities.
He noted that while traditional disciplines such as mechanical and chemical engineering remain relevant, the focus is shifting towards aerospace and advanced digital systems.
He explained that signals of aerospace development have encouraged the Sarawak government to support academic institutions in expanding their capabilities in this field.
This, he said, would position Sarawak to participate in global technological advancements and strengthen its role in the international economy.
The Premier also drew attention to the rapid evolution of AI, describing how technological progress is reshaping industries at an unprecedented pace.
He highlighted the transition from generative AI, which provides instant solutions, to what researchers are calling “strategic AI”. This next stage of artificial intelligence is expected to integrate vast datasets to support complex decision-making processes over the coming years.
He further elaborated that future technological capabilities will depend heavily on computing power, particularly the performance of processing chips, alongside the scale of data infrastructure supported by satellite networks in low earth orbit.
He suggested that data centres alone may no longer be sufficient, as satellite systems and advanced networks will increasingly underpin data transmission and processing.
“Data is the new oil. It will determine the future of the world economy,” he stressed, underlining the central role of information in driving global competitiveness.
The Premier’s remarks reflect a broader recognition of the need to embrace technological shifts to secure long-term economic growth.
By investing in aerospace and AI, Sarawak aims to strengthen its position in the global economy while preparing its workforce for emerging challenges.
Industry observers note that aerospace development could open opportunities in satellite technology, aviation, and defence-related innovation, while AI applications are expected to transform sectors ranging from healthcare and education to manufacturing and logistics.
The Premier’s call for engineers to lead these changes highlights the importance of academic collaboration and research in ensuring Sarawak remains at the forefront of technological progress.
