Khaled: RMAF aircraft procurement still under review

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry is still evaluating several options to meet the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) light combat aircraft (LCA) capability requirements.

This includes whether to proceed with the second phase of the procurement programme or consider other, more suitable alternatives.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the assessment is being conducted based on current operational requirements as well as the RMAF's medium and long-term planning.

"To date, no final decision has been made on the implementation of the second phase of the procurement programme.

"Matters relating to the registration of the project under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and the estimated cost have yet to be finalised," he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.

He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (PN–Tanah Merah) on the status of the second phase of the LCA procurement programme, including whether it had been registered under the 13MP and the estimated cost involved.

Khaled said regardless of the eventual decision, the ministry would ensure that any procurement is carried out transparently and prudently, delivers the best value for the government, and meets the operational and readiness requirements of the RMAF.
