Indra Makes Play For Fighter-Based Airborne Electronic Attack Market

Spanish defense electronics provider Indra says it is developing an airborne electronic-attack system for use on fighters.

The podded system is designed for under-fuselage or wing-mounted carriage, the company said Jan. 22. Indra says the system will be able to jam communication and radar systems. Power levels would also support standoff jamming applications, the company says.

The initiative comes as more countries in Europe and elsewhere are looking at introducing airborne jamming systems. NATO has been developing a stand-in jamming capability code to spur more investment in such systems.

Indra will be competing with companies such as Saab, which is providing systems for German Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons that the Luftwaffe plans to employ in the electronic-attack role. Spain recently placed a Typhoon top-up order, committing to take 25 more of the twin-engine fighters.

Indra is not disclosing when the system may be available, nor its price.
