First FA-50M aircraft sighted as RMAF chief visits KAI
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's first FA-50M light combat aircraft has been sighted for the first time, offering a glimpse of the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) incoming fleet ahead of its expected delivery later this year.
Images released by the RMAF on its official Facebook page showed RMAF chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris posing alongside aircraft "01" during a working visit to Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in Sacheon, South Korea.
The visit, held from April 12 to 15, aimed to review the progress of the FA-50M acquisition programme and receive the latest briefing on its implementation directly from the project team and the manufacturer.
"The briefing covered key aspects, including aircraft development, system integration and delivery timelines to ensure the programme remains on schedule.
"During the visit, Norazlan also conducted a physical inspection of the aircraft assembly and system integration process at KAI's facilities, providing assurance on the project's progress as well as the manufacturer's commitment to meeting RMAF operational requirements," the air force said.
Norazlan also held discussions with KAI on potential future upgrade programmes, while identifying implementation challenges and mitigation measures to ensure the smooth execution of the acquisition.
"The FA-50M programme is a key component of the RMAF's capability enhancement plans, with the aircraft expected to strengthen the service's light combat and training roles.
"The visit reflects the RMAF's continued emphasis on ensuring that the development and acquisition of new assets are carried out in a structured and comprehensive manner, in line with its focus on achieving high levels of capability and readiness, as well as sustaining air defence assets to meet evolving security challenges," it said.
In May 2023, Malaysia and KAI signed a contract worth almost RM4 billion for 18 FA-50M aircraft.
The FA-50Ms will replace the ageing BAE Systems Hawk 108/208 aircraft, which have been in service with the RMAF since 1995.
