China Unveils Upgraded Y-9 Anti-Submarine Aircraft

China has unveiled an upgraded Shaanxi Y-9 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrol aircraft equipped with enhanced surveillance and target-tracking sensors.

Captured during a flight training exercise, the upgraded variant appears to feature a new active phased-array (AESA) radar mounted beneath the nose and a redesigned magnetic anomaly detector (MAD), the Global Times reported, citing Chinese military expert Zhang Junshe.

A MAD system helps locate submerged submarines by detecting disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by their metallic hulls. Typically mounted on the aircraft’s tail to reduce interference, it serves as a key sensor in anti-submarine warfare operations.

According to Zhang, the upgrade is intended to address the challenges of operating in the South China Sea, where depths exceeding 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) and complex sea conditions make submarines harder to detect.

He said the new variant offers significant improvements in submarine search, attack, and battlefield survivability.

Enhanced Features

China publicly unveiled the Y-9 during the 2025 Victory Day military parade. Compared with the Y-8 ASW patrol aircraft, the Y-9 offers a longer range and combat radius, higher takeoff weight, and greater endurance, further enhancing its overall anti-submarine warfare capabilities, Zhang said.

According to the expert, the latest images indicate the aircraft now carries a smaller MAD than the version displayed during the 2025 parade. The more compact sensor reduces magnetic interference from the aircraft’s structure, simplifies maintenance, and extends detection range.

He added that sonobuoy launchers along both sides of the fuselage allow the aircraft to deploy up to 100 sonobuoys of various types in a single mission, creating an underwater listening network spanning dozens of kilometers for improved detection of submerged targets.

Zhang said the new Y-9 variant has entered operational training, indicating it has achieved initial combat capability with basic submarine search and attack functions.

Operational Debut

Its growing operational role was highlighted in March, when the upgraded Y-9 was intercepted by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force aircraft over the East China Sea during what was believed to be its first publicly reported operational flight.

Based on images released by Japan, The Aviationist wrote that the aircraft is distinguished by a prominent dome beneath its nose and a longer tail-mounted MAD “sting.”

Its elongated nose is believed to house an AESA radar capable of air-to-air, air-to-ground, and synthetic aperture radar surveillance.

The Chinese Military Aviation blog reported that the aircraft features an electro-optical system beneath the cockpit, a SATCOM antenna, wingtip electronic support measures antennas, and new missile approach warning sensors.

The blog said the aircraft entered development around 2020 before making its public debut during the 2025 Victory Day parade.
