Army to receive new helicopters, artillery to boost capabilities

KUALA LUMPUR: The army is set to receive new assets to bolster its capabilities beginning next year.

Army chief General Datuk Azhan Md Othman said four Leonardo AW149 helicopters are expected to be delivered under a 15-year government lease.

"The helicopters are expected to arrive starting in August next year and will enhance the operational readiness of the army air wing.

"The air wing is also set to receive four utility combat helicopters under a five-year lease through an open tender, following the cancellation of a previous Black Hawk lease contract.

"In addition, the army is planning to continue leasing four AW139 helicopters currently leased by the Royal Malaysian Air Force," he said at a press conference after the 93rd Army Day parade at Sungai Besi Camp.

The government entered into a RM16.6 billion, 15-year lease for 28 Leonardo AW149 helicopters, which covers maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, training, skill transfers, insurance and financing costs.

Azhan also said the acquisition of self-propelled howitzers is underway and expected to enter service next year.

Earlier at the same press conference, he said the army aims to remain a conventional force while becoming future-ready to face evolving security threats, including hybrid warfare, multi-domain conflicts and regional geopolitical uncertainties.

He said the move forms part of a holistic transformation undertaken with the armed forces to meet the requirements of a future land force.

Azhan said the evolution would see the army develop capabilities to maintain a credible, agile and decisive force posture.
