Budget 2023: RM7bil Kulim Airport project cancelled as airports in Penang & Subang get major upgrade?

KUALA LUMPUR: The government plans to expand and upgrade Penang International Airport and Subang Airport here to attract more investors, traders and tourists.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said these plans will be far cheaper than building a new airport in Kulim, Kedah that will cost RM7 billion.

“In order to support and encourage the influx of investors, traders and tourists, the government plans to expand and improve the capacity of Penang International Airport and Subang Airport.

“The expansion proposal that will be led by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd is expected to benefit economic growth at a much lower cost than the proposal to build a new airport in Kulim which is estimated at RM7 billion,” he said when tabling the revised 2023 Budget 2023 today.

The government also plans to develop a main port in Carey Island, Selangor.

Anwar said in order to support the development of international trade, the government supported the proposed development of the main port on Carey Island by the private sector.

“This project is expected to strengthen Port Klang as the main hub port for the Southeast Asian region,” he added
