Aerospace Composites Malaysia Sdn Bhd

The sky’s the literal limit for Malaysia’s aerospace industry and this rings true for the Company that made Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah as their base of operation. Aerospace Composites Malaysia Sdn Bhd. (ACM), a world leader in supplying composite products and subassemblies to the global aerospace industry, is a joint-venture between two United States companies, The Boeing Company and Hexcel Corporation, each with a 50 percent stake in ACM.

Established in 1998, the Company is located in Bukit Kayu Hitam Industrial Area, Kedah, Malaysia, a mere five-minute drive from the Malaysia – Thailand border and less than two from Penang. The USD 32 million ACM plant was officially opened by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in September 2002.

In a short period of time, ACM had achieved some significant milestones. In 2005, ACM became the world’s sole producer of aileron composites for the Next-Generation 737 commercial jetliner. Before producing ailerons, ACM was the sole producer and distributor of the fixed trailing-edge composite and fixed leading-edge composite for the Boeing 737, 747, 757, 767 and 777 commercial airplane models. In 2008, Boeing selected ACM to provide the elevator and rudder machined honeycomb core for the 777.

In order to support the increase in production by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, ACM underwent a 40 percent factory expansion which was completed in September 2013. The USD 17 million investment added 125,000 ft2 to a factory footprint now expanded to 440,000 ft2. It allows ACM to continue expanding production of composite flight surfaces for all Boeing airplane programs, including the 787 Dreamliner.

In 2017, ACM had started to forge ahead with new 777X work, including composite fixed trailing edge panels and empennage panels. These successes firmly entrenched the Company into the Boeing Supply Chain. The same year has seen ACM commencing developmental programs that includes the 767 Pressure Pan, 777X FTE, 777X Empennage, 777X Rib Chord, 777X Closure Seal, 787 Cap Filler, 737 P8 and 737 MAX Winglet. As of 2018, the mass production of the 787 Passenger Support Box has started and the shipment of the 737 D-Nose First Article Inspection (FAI) has been presented to our customer.

Recently, in May of 2018, ACM was given due recognition of having an outstanding safety culture, achieving five years and over ten million-man hours of no lost time due to injury. In the preceding year of 2017, ACM was awarded Boeing Chairman Safety Award in recognition of the safety culture and initiatives inculcated in the Company. ACM continuously strives to achieve Global Industrial Champion standard to operate in an injury-free environment. As part of Boeingglobal operations, the safety and wellbeing of ACM employees and safe operations of the facilities is second to none.

With over 16 years of manufacturing experiences under its wings and a more than 900 strong skilled workforce, ACM will continue to support the growth of Malaysia’s aerospace industry and concurrently position ourselves to address future needs of the global aerospace industry.
